Location is the key to a successful film production in South Dakota
|
PIERRE, S.D. -- Film in South Dakota and produce more than a movie; create an unforgettable experience. From the agricultural east to the mountains of the rugged Black Hills, South Dakota is a “Land of Infinite Variety.”
The South Dakota Film Office has everything you need to get started, from locations, crew and service listings to resources and tax incentives. South Dakota has been home to a variety of productions since the early 1900’s, including Hidalgo, Dances with Wolves, and Into the Wild.
Finding the perfect location is the key to a successful production. Locations in South Dakota can range from the rolling prairies of the northeast to the farms and small towns of the southeast to the Black Hills scattered with lakes and streams in the west. The Missouri River flows southward through the middle of the state separating the prairie from the hills. And don’t forget the Badlands, one of the most unique places on earth.
The weather in South Dakota is also something to talk about. The state experiences all four seasons, each changing the scene across the state, creating a warm summer and a winter that can certainly be felt. Our skies are clear with excellent visibility no matter what the season, making it possible to capture it all, right here in South Dakota.
General filming permits are not required in South Dakota, although it is required to have permission to use both public and private land. A permit is required at national parks, monuments, memorials, forests and grasslands.
Beginning in 2006, tax incentives became available. For a nationally or regionally distributed motion picture, documentary, television film or single television advertising project in South Dakota, the state will refund 100 percent of the excise tax incurred on the project. In order to be eligible for this program, the project must exceed $250,000 in taxable costs incurred in South Dakota.
The second incentive allows motel rooms in South Dakota to be exempt from both city and state tax if rented for 28 consecutive days.
The South Dakota Film Office, a component of the South Dakota Department of Tourism and State Development, was formed in 1989. To learn more about filming in South Dakota visit www.filmsd.com or contact the South Dakota Film Office at (800) 952-3625.
