What to know and how to apply for film permits at South Dakota's National Parks.

PIERRE, S.D. – Film in South Dakota and produce more than a movie; create an unforgettable experience! An unforgettable experience in one of South Dakota’s National Parks requires a film permit; an application each film crew must complete.
South Dakota is home to seven areas that are part of the National Park Service; Badlands National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail, Minuteman Missle National Historic Site, Missouri National Recreational River, Mount Rushmore National Memorial and Wind Cave National Park.
“We like to visit with film crews and obtain a film permit so we can make sure the crews understand the importance of our natural resources within the national park system,” said Gerard Baker, Superintendent at Mount Rushmore National Memorial. “We want to maintain the history of our national parks and want to make sure film crews understand how important that is.”
The first step in applying for a film permit is to request a Special Use Permit Application for the National Park Service. Information about National Parks in South Dakota can be found at www.nps.gov or by visiting the South Dakota Film Office website, www.FilmSD.com. The application will contain some basic information about the film, the type of project and the number of people involved. Most application fees require a $100 non-refundable processing fee.
Depending on the size and number of crew members involved, a location fee may also be charged. More information regarding location fees can be requested from each individual location.
Once the application is reviewed and approved, a film permit is issued.
A film permit is required for any filming or photography that involves: the use of a model, set or prop; or requires entry into a closed area; or requires access to the park before or after normal working hours.
The efforts of the South Dakota Film Office, a component of the South Dakota Department of Tourism and State Development, are part of Goal 1 of the 2010 initiative to double visitor spending in South Dakota. The Office of Tourism serves under the direction of Richard Benda, Secretary of the Department of Tourism and State Development.
