South Dakota Film Office Wins International Award (posted May 31, 2007)
The 16-page publication used by the film office received third place in an international award contest.

PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Film Office received third place for its direct marketing piece in the Association of Film Commissioners International (AFCI) 2007 Marketing Awards.

The direct mail piece is a 16-page publication used by the film office to showcase South Dakota’s abundant filming locations, recent tax incentive information, film permit information and services provided by the film office.

“Our publication showcases some of South Dakota’s great filming locations and important information regarding filming in the state,” said Billie Jo Waara, director, South Dakota Office of Tourism. “We’re excited to have placed third in this international marketing contest in which over 300 film commissions from 30 countries participate.”

During the 2007 Locations Trade Show the Film the West booth placed third in the Grand Prize category. The South Dakota Film Office is part of Film the West, a consortium of the film offices in South Dakota, Montana, Idaho and Wyoming. The four offices work collaboratively to attend trade shows and host receptions throughout the year, and share booth space at the AFCI Locations Trade Show.

“Film the West has really worked hard to create a booth space that catches the eye of those attending the trade show,” said Billie Jo Waara, director, South Dakota Office of Tourism. “We’re very excited to have placed third this year.”

AFCI Locations Trade Show is the industry’s longest-running trade event for production locations and resources. More than 200 exhibitors from across the world were in attendance. AFCI is a non-profit educational organization founded in 1975 to serve the needs of on-location film and television production.

The efforts of the South Dakota Film Office, a component of the South Dakota Department of Tourism and State Development, are part of Goal 1 of the 2010 initiative to double visitor spending in South Dakota. The Office of Tourism serves under the direction of Richard Benda, Secretary of the Department of Tourism and State Development.
