PIERRE, S.D. – An exclusive screening of INTO THE WILD will take place during the South Dakota Film Festival in Aberdeen on Friday, September 21, 2007.
“Our office is very excited to have earned the opportunity to screen this major motion picture at the inaugural film festival,” said Billie Jo Waara, director, South Dakota Office of Tourism. “Films such as ‘Into the Wild’ provide South Dakota with well deserved recognition; we look forward to future opportunities to host major motion pictures in our state.”
INTO THE WILD follows the life of idealist Christopher Johnson McCandless, who after graduating from college in 1990, cuts all ties with family and friends, gives his entire savings to charity and begins an adventurous journey focused upon living off the land in Alaska. His journey brought him through Carthage, South Dakota in early 1992 where he worked at a grain elevator to save money for his journey to Fairbanks, Alaska. McCandless hitchhiked to Fairbanks and entered the wilderness in April 1992.
Paramount Vantage and River Road Entertainment present INTO THE WILD, written and directed by Sean Penn (THE INDIAN RUNNER, THE CROSSING GUARD, THE PLEDGE). The producers are Penn, Art Linson (FIGHT CLUB, THE UNTOUCHABLES) and Bill Pohlad (BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN). The executive producers are John J. Kelly, Frank Hildebrand and David Blocker. The behind-the-scenes team includes cinematographer Eric Gautier (THE MOTORCYLE DIARIES), production designer Derek R. Hill (THE CROSSING GUARD), costume designer Mary Claire Hannan (HURLYBURLY), editor Jay Cassidy (a constant Penn collaborator and editor of AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH) and composers Michael Brook, Kaki King and Eddie Vedder. Vedder also wrote and performed the original songs.
Starring with Emile Hirsch (LORDS OF DOGTOWN, ALPHA DOG) is a cast that includes Academy Award® winners Marcia Gay Harden (MYSTIC RIVER, POLLOCK) and William Hurt (A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE, KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN), Tony and Emmy Award? winner Hal Holbrook (WALL STREET), Academy Award® nominee Catherine Keener (CAPOTE), Jena Malone (PRIDE & PREJUDICE, SAVED!), Kristen Stewart (IN THE LAND OF WOMEN, PANIC ROOM), Vince Vaughn (THE BREAKUP, WEDDING CRASHERS), and Brian Dierker.
Writer and director Sean Penn was in South Dakota during the summer of 2006 while filming in Carthage and at the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary in southwest South Dakota.
“The opportunity to screen this film during the opening gala of the festival is incredible,” said Lesa Jarding, film and media representative, South Dakota Office of Tourism. “South Dakota will be showcased in theatres across the country that night and what better way to celebrate than watching the film right here at home.”
The South Dakota Film Office has been working with Paramount Vantage for the last several months to provide a special venue for an exclusive screening of the film in South Dakota.
“We’re pleased that Paramount Vantage has accepted our offer to showcase this major motion picture in conjunction with the festival,” said Waara.
The South Dakota Film Festival will be held at the Capitol Theatre in Aberdeen, S.D. from September 21-23, 2007. For more information about the festival including how to purchase session passes visit www.southdakotafilmfest.org or call the Capitol Theatre at (605) 225-2228.
The efforts of the South Dakota Film Office, a component of the South Dakota Department of Tourism and State Development, are part of Goal 1 of the 2010 initiative to double visitor spending in South Dakota. The Office of Tourism serves under the direction of Richard Benda, Secretary of the Department of Tourism and State Development.
