Filming on Location during the Fall in South Dakota (posted Nov 26, 2007)
Spearfish Canyon, the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary and the Missouri River bluffs are just a few of the many filming locations that are perfect for any fall film project in South Dakota.

PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota becomes a whole new place when the leaves begin to turn and the temperatures begin to drop. Spearfish Canyon, the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary and the Missouri River bluffs are just a few of the many filming locations that are perfect for any fall film project.

“South Dakota has a plethora of filming locations available throughout the year,” said Billie Jo Waara, director, South Dakota Office of Tourism. “But some of the best locations our state has to offer are even better when the leaves are falling.”

Location: Spearfish Canyon
Spearfish Canyon is flanked by towering limestone cliffs. A forest of spruce, pine, aspen, birch and oak covers the hillsides while Spearfish Creek flows along the canyon bottom. Bridal Veil and Roughlock Falls are highlights along the route, US Highway 14A. The scenery in Spearfish Canyon is quite unique.

Location: Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary
The Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary is home to hundreds of wild mustangs on 11,000 acres. The landscape is a blend of canyons, pine trees and prairie. More than 500 head of wild mustangs feed off of the prairie grass and Cheyenne River water.

Location: Missouri River bluffs
The Missouri River runs through the heart of South Dakota. It serves as part of the trail Meriwether Lewis and William Clark took as they explored the new territory. It’s also home to four reservoirs.

“Filming on location in South Dakota is such a unique experience for all production crews,” said Lesa Jarding, film and media representative, South Dakota Office of Tourism. “Not only do we have incredible locations, but the resources and people we have available make South Dakota the perfect fit.”

The efforts of the South Dakota Film Office, a component of the South Dakota Department of Tourism and State Development, are part of Goal 1 of the 2010 initiative to double visitor spending in South Dakota. The Office of Tourism serves under the direction of Richard Benda, Secretary of the Department of Tourism and State Development.
