PIERRE, S.D. – National Treasure: Book of Secrets will be in theatres December 21. The Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Film spent over two weeks filming on location in South Dakota.
South Dakota filming locations included Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Sylvan Lake in Custer State Park and the Black Hills National Forest.
“South Dakota has great natural and man-made landmarks, a welcoming populace and cooperative authorities,” said Jerry Bruckheimer, executive producer, National Treasure: Book of Secrets. “Dakotans are glad to share their resources, and the fact that we had such freedom to film at Mount Rushmore National Memorial and in the Black Hills is proof of that. And there’s no doubt that South Dakota looks fantastic on film.”
The film is a follow up to the box-office hit National Treasure, released in 2004; treasure hunter Ben Gates (Nicolas Cage) once again sets out on an exhilarating, action-packed new global quest to unearth hidden history and treasures. When a missing page from the diary of John Wilkes Booth surfaces, Ben’s great-great grandfather is suddenly implicated as a key conspirator in Abraham Lincoln’s death. Determined to prove his ancestor’s innocence, Ben follows an international chain of clues that takes him on a chase from Paris to London and ultimately back to America. This journey leads Ben and his crew not only to surprising revelations – but to the trail of the world’s most treasured secrets. Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and Jon Turteltaub and directed by Turteltaub, the story reunites the original cast including Diane Kruger, Justin Bartha and Academy Award ®-winner Jon Voight, joined this time by four-time Academy Award®-nominee Ed Harris, Academy Award®-nominee Harvey Keitel, and 2006 Academy Award®-winner Helen Mirren.
“Mount Rushmore and South Dakota will be on the big screen in theatres across the country,” said Billie Jo Waara, director, South Dakota Office of Tourism. “We hope that our on-screen presence becomes another reason visitors want to spend time in our state.”
The efforts of the South Dakota Film Office, a component of the South Dakota Department of Tourism and State Development, are part of Goal 1 of the 2010 initiative to double visitor spending in South Dakota. The Office of Tourism serves under the direction of Richard Benda, Secretary of the Department of Tourism and State Development.
